    Huna In Hawaii

    Sources:

McBride; Hawaiian Herbal Medicine - Kahuna La'au Lapa'au by Jane Gutmanis; Valley from the Night Rainbow by Koko Willis and Pali Lee; Hawaiian Antiquities (Mo'olelo Hawai'i) by David Malo. The philosophy of Hawai'i
The Philosphie of Hawai'i is called today Huna. This is not to be confounded with the 7 principles of the American psychologist Serge King.

The Philosphie of Hawaii again-reflects the living standard of the Polynesier on the islands of Hawai'i. the culture, which may celebrate its 1500-sten birthday on the Hawaiian islands already surprised and with their varieties. The picture, by easily dressed South Seas Girls and Surfern, presented with that us the advertisement is not an image of this reichaltigen culture. It has to tell more, as if snap consumption and US-American high-speed food supply or psychological self experience principles.

    Hawaiian values
Since the values of Hawai'i and Polynesien are so different from the today's western values, it does not make a sense, our words for (small) - Famile (Christian) Gods or nature (- alienation) to use.

The Hawaiian literature exists today still in the singing away and until recently over thousands of years verbally into the mele and oli was delivered and over the holy Hula dance to a expression-strong art form developed. By the excessive quantity the Hawaiian-worth in form oli receives the language (olelo) an important position. Up to 5 levels of meanings in the singing for rituals are used. Names had outer-pressure-strong meanings and had in the process of the life also times to be adapted.

Fishing and agriculture are developed in the Hawaiian culture highly and guarantee a filled stomach. The connection is too 'aina, the holy country and entire nature, central.

In the Kahuna the sciences prospered to system to a perfecting that the first Europeans were shifted by 1780 into large astonishment. The sciences were however never cut off of the life, as this is often today in the west the case. Spiritualität, the connection too akua and aumakua was also importantly if it around went being successful with fishing or building of ships.

On an island the desire for co-operation arises as a result of the limited area automatically. Therefore ohana (extended family) each day is maintained. Living together is coined/shaped of Aloha, the mutual attention, the respect, the modesty and of unconditional love.
Before the Christians in Hawaii penetrated maintained the Kanaka Maoli a large number of plays and kind of sport-maintained and knew themselves to very probably maintain.

As one also still could do it in the west before not too long time, the origin is honoured and kupuna (ancestors) ohana receives partly than aumakua a central mirror-image-ritual status.

[- >olelo, oli, 'aina, ohana, kupuna, aloha, akua, aumakua]

    What is Huna called?
In the official dictionary, for which Hawaiian Dictionary of Mary Kawena Pukui and S.H.Elbert stands: Huna is used on Hawaiian for something small or for something keeping secret or covered/hidden.

    1917: Invention of Huna
Max Freedom Long was 1917 as a teacher on Hawaii and in vain tried to draw from the Kahuna their secrets. Frustrated it went back to America.

The comment of Pali Lee to its 1948 published book, The Secret Science Behind Miracles, quotes in "Hawaiian Lomilomi, Big Iceland Massage": "Huna in Hawaiian means something very small and insignificant look for as A grain OF sand. Mr. Long larva A beach out OF that grain OF sand. He thus larva A plumb bob OF money". (Huna stands in Hawaiian for somewhat small insignificant, like a Sandkorn. Mr. Long made a whole beach from the Sandkorn. He made thereby also much money.)

Huna is thus nevertheless not Hawaiian?
Long called Huna magic: "The Secret, Huna, is applied psychology" [CONTENTS]
(The secret, Huna, is applied psychology.)

Serge King: "Max of Long which A student OF psychology, religion and psychic science who did some brilliant work in uncovering much OF the Huna knowledge that is encoded into the Hawaiian LANGUAGE. The relatively few error and sistortions that crept into his early work acres understandable, since he more never had on opportunity tons discuss his findings with A kahuna" [Kahuna Healing P. 9]. (Mr. Lang took the secret knowledge out coded in the Hawaiian language brilliant, although he could never exchange himself with a Kahuna.)
To its own book: "If this history of a philosophy [Huna] for you as facts unakzeptabel is, regards you it as tradition [Kahuna Healing P. 11].

The Stadtschamane of Serge King was outside of Hawai'i a hit and in the west much advertisement for so-called Hawaiian shame anise mash after Serge King and the Huna principles after Serge King made.

Unfortunately there are no Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiian), which would know these Serge King principles. On the contrary: many Hawaiians do not feel respected by the statements in their traditional culture.

    Books concerning Huna of Hawaii
The Hawaiian philosophy like it was lived on the original Hawaiians and is this very day lived may not with that Huna be confounded, which is marketed as Hawaiian. I recommend again the reading of "Hawaiian Lomilomi, Big Iceland Massage" from Nancy S. Kahalewai (shortly on German), in particular the part of "Hawaiiana" with the chapters "Seeing through to Hawaian Eyes", "Ho'oponopono" "Mana" (correspond Chi/AI/Prana) with "Suggestions for Lomilomi" and the chapter "The Kumulipo". - >Buchbesprechung

Furthermore also much to recommend "valley From is the Night Rainbow" from Pali Jeo Lee with texts of its grandmother, Kaili'ohe Kame'ekua of Molokai (1816-1931), which originally existed only on Hawaiian and is present since 1986 also on English. Kaili'ohe was 17 as the mission acres on Molokai penetrated (Kingdom of Kamehameha 1). So it can tell delivered stories about humans of Tahiti, which came 700 years before their time to Hawai, in addition, about the influence of the mission acres on the community and family ('ohana) the country ('aina) and the Kahuna system. The book is to be bought 2004 with Nativebooks again to on-line.

Ua ao ka `ao`ao `upena nei, ua hiki mai la `oe.

The above translates to:  Light comes to this webpage, for you are here

For those who feel that the beautiful art of Hula is grass skirts and coconut shells,  there is so much more to it. The fact that Hula is not just a dance it is symboliccaly descriptive, with arm and hand movements, it is graceful.  The instruments that are generally used are sharkskin drums, gourds, stone castanets, and bamboo rattles. Missionaries, who arrived in Hawaii in 1820, labeled the dance heathen and succeeded in having it banned. Nonetheless, it continued to be clandestinely taught and danced.  Chant accompaniment yielded to music, drums and gourds to ukelele and guitar. The sensual swivel of the hips was accentuated, and the dance became a tourist staple and a feature of Hollywood productions. In the 1970s, however, a Hawaiian cultural renaissance revived interest in traditional hula. I can only hope that the Hawaiin cultrue of dance will continue and not be forgotten...
